What is a Grosvenor Teacher Fellow?

The Grosvenor Teacher Fellowship is a professional development opportunity for educators who teach PreK to 12th grade across North America made possible through a mission-driven alliance between National Geographic and Lindblad Expeditions. Through an extremely competitive application process, educators are selected to complete hands-on field-based learning aboard a National Geographic Lindblad Expedition. Learn more about the fellowship program here.

Where is Patagonia?

Patagonia is a region that covers the very bottom of South America spanning both Chile and Argentina. The region includes the southern section of the Andes Mountains along with lakes, fjords, rainforests, and even glaciers on the Chilean side. Patagonia has the Pacific Ocean on the west, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, the Drake Passage to the South, and the numerous bodies of water that connect them including the Strait of Magellan and the Beagle Channel. I will be heading to the very very bottom of Patagonia.

How long will it take you to get there?

Check out this Google Earth Project to see my flight path. First, I fly from Boston, MA to Miami, FL (about a 3 and a half hour flight). After a 3-hour layover, I fly overnight from Miami to Santiago, Chile (about an eight-hour flight). Don't worry I'm probably the best plane sleeper you will ever meet (but I might be too excited to sleep!) I'll spend the day/night in Santiago and then fly from Santiago, Chile to Ushuaia, Argentina (another 3 and a half hour flight). Once in Ushuaia, I'll board my expedition ship.

What are you most excited about?

Everything! From seeing elephant seals, penguins, condors, and maybe even whales to the Andes
Mountains and even glaciers the wildlife and landforms are sure to not disappoint. But I think what I am truly most excited about is exploring this part of the world seldom touched by humans to see how it inspires not just me but my students.

What will the weather be like?

Given I'm heading to the Southern Hemisphere it will be springtime. I start in Santigo which will be very warm with temperatures in the high 70s. Patagonia is further south with springtime highs of 50℉ to lows of 30℉. But it can change from sunny to rainy to maybe even snowy all in a matter of one day so luckily New England weather has prepared me well.
